The semiconductor industry exhibits clear cyclicality. In 2019, the semiconductor market was at a low point, and coupled with the impact of the trade war, falling prices of memory chips caused Samsung to lose its position as the industry’s top player in semiconductors. However, the chairman of Taiwan’s Winbond Electronics predicts that the market will stage a strong recovery in 2020. He also pointed out that even if China invests heavily in developing the semiconductor industry, it will still take at least 20 years to cultivate talent and accumulate the necessary technological expertise.
